milkblood

I am excited to help spread the word that Mark Matthews’ stellar novel Milk-Blood has been optioned for film by Monkey Knuckle Films! I am extremely happy for Mark on his huge accomplishment, he is one hell of a writer and I highly recommend picking up his books. The option also includes the rights to The Damage Done, a prequel story that introduces readers to the mentally ill heroin addict Jarvis. I remember when I read Milk-Blood last year and I was impressed with the originality and rawness of the story. Matthews’ strong characterization and descriptions of Brentwood – a dangerous part of Detroit that is filled with abandoned, burned-out homes and drug dealers – seem like they will translate extremely well to the big screen. Here is the announcement:

MILK-BLOOD, a novel by Mark Matthews, has been optioned for a full length feature film by Monkey Knuckle Films. The option includes rights to the short story, The Damage Done, a companion piece to the novel.

MILK-BLOOD is true reality horror with supernatural elements that only serve to make it more believable,” explains executive producer Michael Bradford. “The story will certainly hold an audience.”

MILK-BLOOD is the story of a ten-year-old girl named Lilly, born with a heart defect, who lives on a Detroit street where poverty, urban despair, addiction, and both the living and the dead threaten her outside her doorstep. The author has tapped into this experience as a social worker to create what one review site calls, “an urban legend in the making.”

Monkey Knuckle Films is a newly created LLC, but the founders have a long history of horror, and have worked with actors such as Sid Haig from The Devil’s Rejects, and much of the cast of The Evil Dead. They are currently in post-production for the horror film, “Elder Island“, set for release in 2016. MILK-BLOOD was a semi-finalist for the 2015 Best Kindle Book Awards and is available in paperback, Kindle, or audiobook on Amazon.

I praised the novel in my review and the balance of real-life horror and supernatural made this one of the most original horror novels I have read in years. I didn’t formally publish a “Best of” list last year, but if I did, Milk-Blood would have easily been near the top. I promise that I am not just saying that because Mark was kind enough to put my blurb on the cover, which has to rank as one of the coolest achievements in The Horror Bookshelf’s history. If you want to get a head start on the story, pick up a copy of The Damage Done, which is currently being offered as a free download on Amazon. You won’t be disappointed!

Mark’s announcement also comes with a few other surprises for fans of his work. He revealed that a sequel to MILK-BLOOD is scheduled for release in early 2016. Here is what he had to say: “The sequel is some twisted material,” says Matthews, “but with a purpose. Horror without heart doesn’t appeal to me, and I don’t think to many readers.” In addition to the big news, Mark is offering up a free download of Milk-Blood to the first ten people to email him at  WickedRunPress@gmail.com . No word yet on distribution for the film, but I will definitely be watching when the film is released! Be sure to stop by Mark’s blog for more information about his writing and check out some of his other great books on his Amazon page.

tonyknighton

Author Tony Knighton’s latest release, Happy Hour and Other Philadelphia Cruelties, is out today in e-book format through Crime Wave Press! Here is the collection’s description courtesy of the publisher:

A young grifter steals an overcoat. As he discovers forty-thousand dollars in its inside pocket, the coat’s owners come after him. The action never stops as his pursuers seem to be both ahead and behind him at all times, killing and destroying everything in their wake to catch up with their money and the young thief.
Happy Hour is as breathless as writing can be.
Knighton’s debut novella is accompanied by a selection of short stories that can run with the best of American Noir literature. It’s cold out there, folks.

The novel features Knighton’s debut novella Happy Hour and a collection of other stories. My first exposure to Knighton’s writing was through his excellent story “Sunrise” in Grey Matter Press’ anthology Equilibrium Overturned. “Sunrise” was about a father who must navigate through a dangerous city ravaged by an environmental disaster in order to save his son’s life. The story was gritty, full of action, and packed an emotional punch that had me thinking about the story long after I was finished reading. I am looking forward to reading this collection as I love Knighton’s writing style and have been on a bit of a noir kick lately.

Purchase Happy Hour and Other Philadelphia Cruelties on Amazon. Print copies will be available at a later date.

savagebeasts

Grey Matter Press is currently accepting submissions for an upcoming anthology tentatively titled Savage Beasts. They are looking for previously unpublished works of dark fiction that have been inspired by music. I have been tweeting the link for this since it was announced at the end of July, but I wanted to do a post here for any of my readers who don’t use Twitter. If you are interested in learning more about the anthology or are interested in submitting your work, head on over to their website for the detailed submission guidelines.

Now, anyone who has read any of my reviews knows how much I love Grey Matter Press, so it goes without saying that I will be looking forward to this anthology. As an avid music listener and occasional music journalist , I was REALLY excited when I read that the theme was going to be centered around music. Just when I didn’t think I could love Grey Matter Press any more, they announce an anthology that contains two of my favorite things in the world. I can’t wait to read the stories that make it into Savage Beasts and figure out what pieces of music inspired the stories! I know it’s probably a long shot, but hopefully someone submits a story inspired by The Toadies “Possum Kingdom”. I always thought that song would make a killer story!

montauk monster

I am super excited to announce that I have been asked to join the blog tour for Hunter Shea’s newest novel, The Montauk Monster! This is my first time participating in a blog tour and I am honored to be joining some other great horror sites and authors on this one. The tour is already under way and I highly recommend checking out the first few posts if you haven’t already. Here is what I had to say about The Montauk Monster in the first installment of “Most Anticipated Summer Reads:

The Montauk Monster is the first thriller novel from horror writer Hunter Shea and after reading the synopsis, I can’t wait to get my hands on this book! I have always had a huge interest in cryptids and remember being completely baffled by the remains that washed up along  the shores of Montauk back in the summer of 2008. Theories ranged from a turtle without a shell all the way to a failed experiment from a government research facility before being determined by many to be the carcass of a raccoon.

In The Montauk Monster, Shea utilizes the failed genetic experiment angle to craft a story that seems absolutely terrifying. I mean, this book has it all! Creepy monsters? Check. Shadowy, top-secret projects from the government? Check. One thing is for certain after reading the synopsis of this book. Seeing how there is not just one but MANY of these creatures terrorizing the residents of Montauk, I will probably be afraid to ever step foot in the water again, fictitious story or not!

I will be featuring a guest post from Hunter on June 28th and a review on July 18th, so I hope you will swing on by and take part in my stop on the blog tour. A huge thank you to Erin Al-Mehairi of Oh, for the Hook of a Book!, Hunter Shea and Kensington Pinnacle for inviting me along for the ride!

Be sure to check out the main tour page to check out all the dates and for information on a special promo for The Montauk Monster!

Grey Matter Press announced today that a special Advance Edition of John F.D. Taff’s The End In All Beginnings, will be available at this year’s World Horror Convention which is set to take place May 8 through May 11 in Portland, Oregon. The collection contains five new novellas from Taff that “explore the painful, emotional horrors of life, love and loss through the ages”. They will be limited in number, so if you are attending the convention make sure you snag a copy, otherwise you will have to wait until July or August like the rest of us! Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the convention, so I guess this gives me another reason to be jealous of those who are going and/or people who get to live in an awesome city like Portland.

The titles of the novellas included are “What Becomes God,” “Object Permanence,” “Love in the Time of Zombies,” “The Long, Long Breakdown” and “Visitation”. Grey Matter Press has outdone themselves again with this one; the cover looks amazing and rumor has it each story was assigned a tarot card illustration, which is a pretty cool idea. Taff is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers (I only recently discovered his work, but so far everything I have read of his has been outstanding). I strongly encourage those who are attending to grab a copy of this, whether you are already a fan or not, because it is sure to be an outstanding collection!

Check out Grey Matter Press’ press release to learn more and see what Jonathan Mayberry(!) had to say about The End In All Beginnings.
